A landlord wants proof of income. A marketplace wants proof you paid. A support agent wants to see the failed charge. In every case you need to show one or two lines of a bank statement — and the screenshot you took shows everything else: account number, balance, address, and a month of your spending.

What to redact before you share

The rule: redact everything the recipient does not need to make their decision.

Account number and sort code, BSB or routing number
Your home address (your name and the statement period usually need to stay)
The running balance column, unless the balance is the point
Transaction lines that are nobody's business — other merchants, transfers to friends, medical payments, subscriptions
Card numbers inside transaction descriptions
Customer and reference numbers in the header and footer

Proving income to a landlord? Keep the salary deposits and their dates. Disputing a marketplace charge? Keep that one line, the date, and — if the platform asks — the last four digits of the card. A support ticket about a failed payment needs the failed payment and nothing else.

Why cropping or drawing over it fails

Cropping removes the edges. Bank statements do not put the sensitive parts at the edges — the account number sits in the header, and the lines you need to hide sit between the lines you need to show.

Drawing over the digits with a marker in an ordinary editor is worse. Semi-transparent strokes can leave the digits readable once someone adjusts brightness and contrast, and some editors save the scribble as a separate layer that can simply be deleted. Note that Arrowbox's own highlighter is a marker-style emphasis tool — it is not for hiding anything. Use the redaction tool. Redactions are the marks Arrowbox flattens on export: the pixels underneath are overwritten, so there is nothing to recover.

Never upload a statement to a random web tool

Plenty of sites offer free blurring and converting. Every one of them means handing a full bank statement to a server you know nothing about — what it logs, what it keeps, who reads it. That is a poor trade for a free tool.

Questions

Can someone recover the account number under the black box?

Not from an export. When you export a PNG, JPEG or PDF, Arrowbox flattens the image and overwrites the pixels under each redaction — there is no layer to remove and nothing to recover. The one exception: a saved .json project file keeps the original for re-editing. Share the export, never the project file.

Is my bank statement uploaded anywhere?

No. Arrowbox runs entirely in your browser and makes zero network calls after the page loads. That is blocked by its Content Security Policy and enforced by an automated build gate — not just promised in a policy. Open your browser's network tab while you work and watch: nothing leaves.

Should I use solid black or pixelate on account numbers?

Solid black. It replaces the digits with flat colour and leaves nothing to analyse. Pixelate and blur are better where you want the reader to see that a line existed — a redacted transaction row, say — without revealing what it said.

Can I redact a multi-page bank statement?

Yes, as images. Take a screenshot of each page, paste them all onto one Arrowbox board with Ctrl+V, redact each one, then export the lot as a single PDF. Every page is flattened on export, so the redactions are permanent in the file you send.
